Day 3

Subject: [firstname]: You must have these skills to be an influential leader.

Hey [firstname]!

Today I want to talk about the three key skills influential leaders must have.

The first is being positive and proactive. The best leaders understand the need to build a strong reputation founded on great competence and a reliable “can-do” attitude. They fulfill their own obligations with ease and expect others to do the same. In so doing, they act positively in their dealings with others. Perhaps most importantly, an influential leader is seen by others as the go-to guy or go-to gal who can help them and find solutions to their problems. These attributes mean others turn to them in their times of need are keen to be associated with them. Influential leaders find this brings many opportunities their way.

Networking is the second key skill influential leaders must have. Like I was saying yesterday: The best leaders know they don't have all the answers, but instead use their influence to get the answers they need. The best way to do this is by extending their reach and leveraging the power of their internal and external networks. To be a good leader, you must learn how to grow a network of contacts and use them, not only for your own benefit but, more importantly, for the benefit of your team and organization. This doesn't just mean having a lot of followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. To be an influential leader, you really need to get out there and get to know people – in both business and social situations.

This leads neatly to the final skill…

To be a great leader you need to be a “people person”. Influential leaders take the time to really get to know people and take a genuine interest in who they are and what they do. They make friends before they really need them, and are regarded by others as “well connected”.
